FIRST GROUP TRAINING

ON SATURDAY I WENT TO THE FIRST GROUP TRAINING SESSION IN ANNAPOLIS. THERE WERE LIKE ABOUT 15 PEOPLE THERE. WE ALL TOOK TURNS INTRODUCING OURSELVES AND GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER. THEN WE DIVIDED INTO WALKERS AND RUNNERS AND WE WERE SPLIT ABOUT 1/2 WAY FOR EACH. I DECIDED TO WALK SINCE I DID'NT THINK I COULD KEEP UP W/THE RUNNERS. SOME WALKERS DID 3 MILES, MY COACH AND THIS OTHER GUY DID 7 MILES RUNNING. MYSELF AND 2 OTHERS DID 4 MILES IN ABOUT AN HOUR. NOT TOO BAD. ONE OF THE MENTORS THERE WAS TELLING ME THERE IS THIS GUY THAT WROTE SOME BOOKS ON THE WALK/RUN METHOD. (WALK5 MIN RUN 2 MIN OR WHATEVER) I WANTED TO FIND OUT WHO IT WAS BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT I THINK I WANT TO DO. OUR COACH SAID THAT EVERYONE DOING THE MARATHON WILL WALK AT SOME POINT SO SOME WILL JUST BE WALKING MORE THAN OTHERS. I SUGGEST TO EVERYONE TO GO TO AS MANY GROUP TRAINING SESSIONS. THEY ARE GOOD MOTIVATION, GOOD PEOPLE TO TALK TO AND THEY CAN GIVE YOU GOOD ADVICE. THIS WEEK SOMETIME I'M GOING TO GO TO SPECIALTY SHOE STORE IN COLUMBIA CALLED FEET FIRST. SUPPOSEDLY THEY ANALYZE YOUR GAIT AND FIND THE BEST SHOES FOR YOU. MY MOM SAID I SHOULD PROBABLY GET TWO PAIR AND ALTERNATE. I ALSO WANT TO GET A HEART RATE MONITOR. EVERYONE SAYS POLAR IS THE BEST. I'M REALLY GETTING EXCITED ABOUT THIS. I THINK IT IS GOING TO BE SO AWESOME AND A GREAT FEELING WHEN ITS OVER. MY MOM, TOM, MY BROTHER AND MY GRANDMA ARE ALREADY MAKING PLANS TO COME TO THE RACE.
ALRIGHT ABOUT FUNDRAISING, MY LETTER WILL BE SENT OUT THIS WEEK. HOPE EVERYONE'S LETTERS ARE ALMOST DONE. I AM ALSO PLANNING ON HAVING A YARD SALE AT MY HOUSE SOMETIME IN JULY AND AM TELLING MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY IF THEY WANT TO DONATE STUFF TO IT. SO I HOPE YOU WILL ALL WANT TO PARTICIPATE. WE SHOULD TRY TO PICK A DATE SINCE I KNOW SUMMER WEEKENDS BOOK UP QUICK. WE CAN ORDER TNT SIGNS AND THINGS FOR FREE TO ADVERTISE IT. I DON'T THINK WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A PROBLEM W/THE $.
GOOD LUCK W/YOU TRAINING!!!!

I want to try and go to that store too. I am glad that your first run went well. I want to run with my team but I can't get up at 6:30 to run :( If they have a later one, I will make that. Even a 7:30 run would be better! I will help out with the yard sale. I know my Mom will be at the race, along with my Brother, sister-in-law and Neice (not Dennis, but Richard). Maybe the night before, we can all go out to dinner or the night after!
Reading your post was really motivating Sarah. I was going to take today off and not run, but I think I will anyway.

Glad to hear the group training went well!!! My older sister and I ran 3 miles on saturday morning. I was really excited b/c it felt really good and I think by sticking with the workouts during the week it really helps with the long runs. It just gave me more motivation to keep going so today Jamie and I walked 2 miles. Back to running tomorrow.

Yes I have also heard you should have 2 pairs of running shoes to alternate with. I have a good pair now but have been looking for a second. I am going to that store you mentioned in columbia as well. Hear a lot of good things about them. Also TNT is hosting a information meeting there about nutrition, hydration, etc... see below. I think you need to rsvp. I am going to try to go! Anyone want to join me????

Sarah I am definetly interested in joining you for a yard sale. I was actually going to ask you if you would host it around your area. What about July 17th???

The run/walk program they were talking about could possibly be by Budd Coates. There is a copy of his training schedule in the running book I have and it does like run X amount of minutes and Walk X amount of minutes and you up the minute each week. Also Hal Higdon may have a run/walk program. You should visit his website www.halhigdon.com. Also take a look at this site I ran across: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,5033,s6-51-184-0-236,00.html

I have a heart rate monitor and I love it but it does way more than i need. I got a Nike one and I spent way to much but I didn't know. I have seen a lot of info on polar and they seem really popular. Check out www.holabirdsports.com . The heart rate monitor I got was $30 cheaper there than anywhere else I found. Holabird is right off of 695. They also carried a ton of polar monitors which I probably should have gotten and not spent so much. Live and learn. I love it though so I don't really regret it so much. I basically picked it for it's color, not so much functionallity. The one thing you can do with mine is set it for interval training where it will alert you for the different run/walk times. You can set it to alert after 5 in. then 2min. then back to 5 min. etc... Sarah you would probably really benefit form this so you wouldn't have to keep track of the time, the watch does it for you. I got the Nike Triax C10. I know that the C8 did intervals as well and was a little cheaper but the buttons were orange and I choose blue. So pathetic!!!

Well keep up the good work everyone!!!

I think I should be able to make it up there on the 1st for the meeting. Did you say it was at the Feet First store? I was going to buy a pedometer but it was all too confusing and the people around here do not know what they are talking about. Maybe I can get one there. Any weekend works for me.

Has anyone lost any weight from all of this? I dont know if it is just me being conscious about what I eat or its the runs/walks I have taken, but I have lost about 3-4 pounds. My legs look better than they have in years too.
